The Karpaz Peninsula or “panhandle” as it is known by locals is a land where time stood still. Miles and miles of untouched white sandy beaches is what will greet you. In addition, ancient towns, basilicas, ruins and tombs are scattered throughout the region waiting to be explored. To truly get a taste of what Cyprus was like 20 years ago, a visit to the Karpaz is a must. Villagers live off their cultivated land and this forms the main supply of their food source. Rich in subterranean water reservoirs crops such as tobacco are grown in abundance. Another main source of income is fishing. Kumyali and Boğaz are the main fishing centres in the Karpaz. Worth visiting for a fresh seafood lunch!
The Karpaz is a nature reserve for wild flowers, birds and sea fossils which can be found everywhere. As one of the least polluted regions in the European periphery and the abundance of unpopulated sandy beaches the Karpaz has become the main nestling ground for the endangered Chelonia Mydas and Caretta Caretta sea turtles throughout the Eastern Mediterranean. Around 1,500 female turtles laid eggs on the shores of North Cyprus in 1992.
